Found in the Mr. Boston Guide, and, at present, I have no history or background on the development of the cocktail. So who cares? Most people just want to DRINK their cocktails, not talk about them like some ex-girlfriend with a questionable history.
While in a suitably 'Deco-Punk' mode this evening before settling for the night, I wound up pulling some Beefeater London Dry Gin from the cabinets, and wanted to put together something late-evening oriented, but not so pretentious and hoity toity as a Gin Martini(which also invariably gives me heartburn, but then, so do most cocktails these days). This entry came up in the guide.
At its fundamentals, the Club Cocktail is basically a Gin Manhattan, if such a thing existed. It's about three parts gin to one part sweet vermouth, stirred with ice, strained and garnished with cherry. Very basic (just like a Manhattan). I suppose, much like a Manhattan, you could serve on ice in a rocks glass or old fashioned glass instead of a cocktail goblet and it would be perfectly acceptable (really, who cares about shit like that nowadays?). I'd also reckon, much like the varieties of Manhattan out there, adding a splash of maraschino juice into the mix ('for love', as an insightful server at Buffalo Chophouse once quipped) would help sweeten the deal if the Vermouth weren't already helping enough. The juniper of the gin gives it a more summery flavour, and leaves out some non-whiskey drinkers' 'Bitter Pout' reaction -- albeit many folx nowadays eschew from gin entirely as well. I suppose the gin element could make it a useful apperitif, but to me, this feels more like a summer cocktail to have after sunset, and might not suck accompanied by a cigarette, but wouldn't work with a cigar or pipe.
And that's Booze you can Use....
